Although it is a tough market, green hiring has been growing nearly twice as fast as the supply of people with green skills for a number of years. Employers want climate talent faster than the workforce is producing it. A critical finding is more than half of green hires now land in roles that don't say "climate" anywhere in the title. The market has quietly decided that climate work is everyone's work, from finance to logistics to AI infrastructure. That's the thread of today's issue, along with a satellite company, a decarbonization lead at Bloomberg, and an AI safety lectureship in England. The job title "climate analyst" is not where most of the climate jobs are.

LinkedIn's Global Green Skills Report found that 53% of green hires now go to people with non-green job titles: engineers, procurement leads, data analysts, finance managers applying a climate perspective to work that was never labeled environmental. For the first time, that share has crossed half.

The demand gap is growing. Green hiring grew 7.7% a year from 2021 to 2025. The share of workers who actually hold green skills grew 4.3%. Candidates with at least one green skill are getting hired at a 46.6% higher rate than the overall workforce. In India that premium is close to 60%.

The tech sector is driving a specific version of this. AI is consuming more grid capacity and water than most people realize: data centers already account for 1-2% of global electricity use and rising. The same models causing that load are forecasting wildfires, balancing renewable-heavy grids, and improving hurricane tracking in ways traditional models can't match. LinkedIn describes the result as the "twin transition." Among AI professionals, green operational skills grew 579% in a single year. Energy management is the fastest-growing green skill in the world right now.

The World Economic Forum projects environmental engineer and renewable energy engineer among the fastest-growing roles through 2030, with about 40% net growth. The bigger signal is simpler: organizations need people who already know how to do something and can bring climate fluency to it.

A finance professional who understands carbon accounting. A program manager who can read an energy dashboard. A data analyst who knows what a grid operator actually worries about. Those combinations are genuinely scarce. Find ways to do climate and other skills/sectors.

Impact joke of the day. Our office AI suggested we cut emissions by scheduling all meetings as emails. We asked what to do with the time saved. It scheduled a meeting about it.

A heatwave is testing the US grid just as AI demand peaks (Al Jazeera, June 30). Record electricity demand collided with 100-degree temperatures on the US east coast last week, with data centers, many in northern Virginia, adding load the grid was never designed for. Researchers even measure a "data heat island effect" around AI facilities.

Google's own report: clean energy up 8x, supply chain emissions up 25% (Google, this week). The company's 2026 environmental report is unusually candid: its AI build-out is growing faster than the grid is decarbonizing, even as its AI flood and wildfire forecasting reaches more than 80 countries. Both truths in one document.

Green skills are outgrowing green job titles (Sustainability Magazine, on LinkedIn's Global Green Skills Report). The data behind this issue's feature: hiring demand racing ahead of skills supply in all 47 countries analyzed, and Ghana and Nigeria already ahead of the US on green-skill share.

"If the US fixates on winning the AI race, it could lose the grid reliability race" (Stanford Woods Institute). Former White House resilience director Alice Hill on why grid expansion and climate resilience have to be built together, not traded against each other.

The counterpoint: AI won't solve climate change (Union of Concerned Scientists). A physicist's argument that the binding constraint is political will, not information, and that climate applications will only ever be a sliver of what data centers actually compute. A useful check on the optimism above, ours included.
