AI Safety and Impact: Recent Developments

In the ever-evolving world of AI, some recent headlines have been shaking things up faster than your morning coffee! ☕

January 20, 2025: President Donald Trump decided to shake things up by rescinding Joe Biden's 2023 executive order on AI safety. This order had been the backbone of U.S. AI regulations, setting clear guidelines for “safe” AI development. Now? The future of AI regulation feels like it's on a rollercoaster with no seatbelt. 🎢 Buckle up, folks. Full story here.

January 23, 2025: Meanwhile, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Pope Francis joined the AI conversation, calling out the “crisis of truth” caused by AI-generated content that’s eerily human-like. He urged leaders to think twice before letting AI run amok (because nobody wants a world where deepfakes rule the day). Read more here.

BlueDot Impact: Making AI Safer, One Course at a Time

On a lighter note, I’ve started facilitating a section of BlueDot Impact’s AI Governance course! BlueDot is doing incredible work teaching folks how to manage AI responsibly (and keeping us from accidentally creating Skynet).

Their AI Safety Fundamentals series has trained over 3,000 professionals from heavy-hitters like Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and the UK’s AI Safety Institute. Oh, and they make it accessible—most courses are free or donation-based. If you want to get involved (they have some great courses coming up) or spot consultancy gigs, check them out here.

So, what’s your take on all this? Should we worry about AI taking over or just ask it to write us better jokes? 😉
