Loneliness is the New Smoking
AI is accelerating everything. And somehow, in the middle of all of it, the case for human connection keeps getting stronger.
Loneliness already carries a mortality risk comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. That was true before every company started replacing human touchpoints with automated workflows. Researchers who study this are not optimistic about AI companions as a fix. If anything, they worry it goes the other direction.
What does this mean for the impact sector?
A lot of disruption. Organizations are downsizing. Roles are being consolidated or cut. AI is eating workflows that used to take whole teams. Tech fluency is table stakes now, not a differentiator. Anyone waiting for a new wave of human-centered jobs to absorb all this is going to be waiting a long time.
What is not going away is the ability to actually bring people together. Convening, trust-building, designing spaces where real exchange happens. That does not get automated. And it works whether you are in a room or on a screen.
Last week I participated in two separate online events. Same format on paper. Completely different experience. One was a talk fest: presenter after presenter, audience on mute. I checked out halfway through and I was not alone. The other was built for connection: small groups, real conversation, networking woven into the design rather than bolted on at the end. The difference had nothing to do with the platform or the topic. Someone knew how to bring people together, and someone did not.
I see this up close in Medellín. Strong communities already exist here. We added one more, focused on impact, but the talent was always in the city.
What we built was a regular place to connect. Shared ideas, joint events, a few in-person gatherings a year. And this has helped build much deeper cross-sectoral relationships and collaboration.
Business events generated $1.3 trillion in direct spending globally in 2025, up 12% from pre-pandemic levels. People are not just showing up. They are hungry for any gathering that actually works.
Tech fluency matters. You need to understand how AI is reshaping your sector. That is required. What holds its value is knowing how to convene: how to build trust across a room or a screen, how to design something where people actually connect rather than just attend.
