The AI boom comes with a steep environmental price tag. Data centers now consume massive amounts of water for cooling their servers. A typical 100-megawatt data center uses about 2 million liters of water per day—equivalent to the consumption of 6,500 households.

The scale is staggering. U.S. data centers directly consumed 17 billion gallons of water in 2023, with projections suggesting this could double or quadruple by 2028. Globally, data centers may consume up to 1.7 trillion gallons of water by 2027.

The problem is compounded by location choices. About two-thirds of new U.S. data centers built since 2022 are in water-stressed regions. Places like Georgia attract facilities due to their humid climate offering natural cooling, but local communities are reporting disrupted water supplies and contaminated wells.
