🌍 Challenges in AI
While AI holds immense promise, several challenges must be addressed to ensure its sustainability and equitable impact. Here are some of the most pressing issues (of course there are many more we will explore)

  • 💧 Water and Energy Usage
Training AI models is resource-intensive. For instance, data centers powering AI technologies require substantial water for cooling purposes. This demand contributes to water scarcity concerns, especially in areas already facing water stress.

  • 🌐 Access Disparities
The benefits of AI are not distributed evenly. While AI has become increasingly important, multiple infrastructure issues remain a significant barrier in low-income countries, limiting their ability to leverage AI in critical sectors such as healthcare and education.

  • ⚖️ Bias in Training Data
Many AI systems are trained on datasets that lack diversity, leading to biases in their outputs. Studies have shown that facial recognition software is less accurate for darker-skinned individuals, with error rates of up to 35% for darker-skinned women compared to less than 1% for lighter-skinned men.

  • 🛠️ Exploitation in AI Training
The development of AI often relies on labor from the Global South, where workers are tasked with data labeling and content moderation under exploitative conditions. Reports have highlighted that these workers are frequently underpaid and subjected to poor working environments, raising significant ethical concerns.
